Victorian Antique Mahogany Secretary Secretaire Bookcase Butlers Desk English
Width – 42.25″ Depth – 22″ Height – 91.5. Made in England, circa 1890. Two pieces for easier moving. Minor wear marks throughout. Originating in England, this is a Victorian period antique secretary bookcase. Made sometime around the year 1890, it is a lovely piece with lots of storage and display potential. The bookcase, desk, and cupboard sections combine to form a beautiful piece of furniture that is sure to wow all of your guests! The wood used is mahogany which has aged very nicely, developing a rich patina and dark color. There are subtle satinwood inlaid accents on the doors, drawers, and crown. These accents really make the piece pop and were very well done. The brass hardware you see on the piece has been recently replaced. This is not unusual, as hardware on furniture is changed as the styles change over time. Starting at the top in the bookcase section you have three fixed wooden shelves. They have a shelf depth of 8.5 each. The glass doors are made up of thirteen panes of glass each and do lock with any included key. Just below this is a long drawer which appears to be three small drawers. A fold down secretary desk is next. If your space allows this antique secretary bookcase looks very impressive with the desk space left open. The green leather and multitude of drawers and cubbies is iconic. The desk space measures 37 wide x 19.5 deep when opened and is 32 from the floor. This section also locks. Two large cabinet doors house a generous storage space at the bottom. Inside is one shelf which is about half the depth of the cabinet. You can use the shelf to store shorter items and taller items can be put in front of it (or behind if you slide the shelf forward). The cupboard doors lock with a key. The entire antique secretary bookcase sits on bracket feet which are strong and provide a traditional look at the bottom. Being over 120 years old, this piece does have cosmetic marks throughout. These small dings and marks add character and authenticity to the piece. On the interior of the desk, the upper middle drawer used to have a lock but that has been since filled in. There are filled in holes where old hardware used to be as well. The top and bottom do separate for easier transport. This is a lovely piece of furniture that could be the centerpiece of any room in the house!
