SPECTACULAR EARLY AMERICAN CURLY MAPLE BLIND DOOR SECRETARY DESK ca. 1770-1800
Offered here is a spectacular original curly maple Early American blind door secretary desk. My photographs do not do this desk justice. The color is a deep golden maple, almost translucent. The finish is smooth and satiny. The gentle ripples from the hand plane can be felt on the surfaces of the doors and drawers and the drop front and sides. This is an original 200+ year old American antique. Bookcase top 39″ high, 10 1/2″ deep, 35 1/2 wide. Desk 44″ high, 21″ deep, 37 1/2 wide. As with all very old furniture, this desk has some issues. I assume that this desk has had a many owners and caretakers, some more respectful than others. Somewhere along the line, I believe that this desk was housed in either a basement, barn or shed where it was subjected to harsh conditions and insect activity. I have photographed this in the last couple of pictures. As a result, the legs have been ruined and replaced. I believe it originally had the classic Chippendale bracket feet. The left front corner shows the remains of the insect activity. There is no current problem with any insects or the stability or integrity of this desk. Also, all of the original hardware has been replaced, but this was done a long time ago. There are indications of a different hinge configuration on the desk doors. Please observe the photos. The center compartment of the interior also has been reconfigured. Originally, I believe that there was a small door covering that opening. One original lock on one of the 4 graduated desk drawers is missing. All others are intact. There is about 2 1/2 of moulding missing on the upper back side of the bookcase. This desk has a secret compartment. This is a wonderful 200+ year old piece of woodworkers art, and is, considering it’s age and an obvious long period of neglect, in very good antique condition. The curly maple is highly figured and very showy. The finish is smooth and mellow. I have used and loved this desk for many years, and hope that it will find another loving home someday.
