RARE Set Antique Display Side by Side Secretary Desk/Bookcase & Matching Buffet
“VICTORIAN OAK SIDE BY SIDE SECRETARY DISPLAY BOOKCASE” AN ABSOLUTLEY STUNNING PIECE IN EXCELLENT CONDITON. THE MIRRORS HAVE SOME MINOR DISCOLORATION DUE TO AGE, HOWEVER, IN OVERALL GOOD CONDITION. THE CONDITION OF THE WOOD, HARDWARE AND OVERALL FINISH IS ORIGINAL AND IN EXCEPTIONAL CONDITION. THE SHELVES IN THE BOOKCASE SHOW GENTLE WEAR COMENSUATE TO ITS DATED AGE (has 4 shelves, pictures show 3). THESE TYPE OF “DISPLAY CASES” ARE EXTREMELY RARE AND DIFFICULT TO FIND. THEY TYPICALLY WERE UTILIZED AT MERCHANTS AND BEHIND THE COUNTER AND THE WINDOW WITHIN THE CABINET DOOR WAS FOR SOMETHING SPECIAL AND TO BE DISPLAYED, HOWEVER, NOT HANDLED, ONLY DISPLAYED. THESE PARTICULAR PIECES BECOME EVEN more “ONE OF A KIND, SO TO SPEAK”. Because of matching buffet which is also a display case and virtually impossible to find a matched set. (See below for details on buffet). The glass on the front of this bookcase is curved as well as the glass within the door on the desk cabinet with no scratches, chips or breaks.. On the back of the case is a Gentlemans hand written note presenting this lovely piece as a gift to his wife dated 1935, and the cabinet makers name was Fred and in all capital letters, FRED is written, and then what appears to be a caricature. Appraisal indicated having the two matching pieces of extremely rare furniture, would significantly raise the value. ” THE BUFFET” The matching Buffet is also a display case, however the buffet has 2 glass panels therefore you actually can see right through the piece. The glass on the outside end is flush with the wood while the one in the front is curved. Detail on both of these pieces is simply remarkable. I was informed by antique dealers that “it’s a pretty standard size in which they drill the holes to set the back on the buffet on and typically run pretty close in length across the board”, another imperfection is, you can see it looking at the curved glass door, the brass back plate for the keyhole is missing, again easily replaceable, most antique dealers usually have miscellaneous parts like that available, you may not end up with the exact design of that piece but I’m sure they could match it pretty close. The 3rd issue would be the right front leg, the foot would need to be repaired if one was to have it appear as it did when it was original. The toes look as if they were snapped off, possibly somebody trying to move it by themselves and typically that’s when that type of damage occurs, too much pressure is put on the end of a carved foot. The inside of the drawers on both pieces is made of bird’s-eye maple and extremely beautiful. Overall this piece is in good condition. The finish and structure are both in excellent condition. It measures 41″ in height x 43 ” wide x 19.5 deep.. When I had these appraised they were individually appraised and a different appraisal came in for having the matched set. Again, I was told display cases, in itself are rare and you simply do not see any, however, to have the two matching pieces is extremely unusual. She also indicated in her appraisal “for two pieces from one original set to remain together for almost a hundred years virtually didn’t happen, therefore the value of these two pieces together will never go down only will increase as time goes on”. Appraiser has 40 + years experience and had also appraised Estates for people for that number years as well, she is very well educated in the value of just about all antiques and she’s been in the business over 40 years. My opinion, if you’re purchasing for personal use I don’t believe I would even have the foot fixed. You need a long distance to see the foot, and if utilized in dining room other pieces of furniture will likely be placed near the front of the buffet.
