Antique Gimbel Brothers Handpainted Mahogany Secretary
This antique hand-painted mahogany secretary was produced by the Gimbel Brothers in the early 20th century. Gimbel Brothers department store was started in Danville, Illinois as a general store before moving to Philadelphia in 1894. It then found fame and success opposing Macy’s on Fifth Avenue in New York City in 1910. Gimbels bought out Saks in 1923 and was the drive behind Saks becoming a household name for high-end quality goods. Featured in a rich multi-tone mahogany finish, this unique piece is tastefully accented with a twist finial, colorfully hand-painted floral bouquets on the top cabinet and lower secretary, and applied egg molding and scroll work throughout. The arched top cabinet opens up to three spacious interior shelves, while the drop front secretary compartment is divided into six open-front sections above a single drawer that is framed by serpentine corner molding. Beneath the drop-front are two drawers with the original embossed brass medallion handles, and sturdy dovetail joinery. The tasteful lines of this antique piece continue to the legs, which display the classical tapered legs with fluted bases, ball style feet, and reinforcing H-stretcher. The secretary has a functioning locking mechanism and comes with a working key. This piece stands 72 1/2″ high, measures 26″ wide and 17 deep. Item code: 062015 AKR.
